Paintings

Kurzen wanted in his artwork the moderns, but also the old masters. He took this first step in the 1950s with the "Column" paintings; a Cubist structure translated into Grecian theater, by emphasis on the “persona.” Infused with Duchampian surrealism, the Columns become books, and the faces – bit by bit – grow geometric bodies. In Kurzen's late paintings, the Cubism and antique drama open up into wholly original, psychologically-charged spaces.
